I possess only the artistic ability that God has so generously given me. Although I have never received a formal education in art and lack so-called artistic credentials, I enjoy the talent that can only come from my Maker.
Like all artists, I have been drawing and painting as long as I can remember. My stepdad would sit me down at a table -- no matter whose house we were visiting -- and confidently say, “Draw this vase.” And with that he would commence to bragging about my ability to sketch any item set before me.
To draw or paint is truly a spiritual experience for me, little understood except by fellow artists. Although the obsession with perfection is sometimes exasperating, it is truly rewarding and often surprising, even to myself, what I am able to produce. That is how I know God’s hand is at work -- where else can this come from?
I was fortunate to be a pioneer for the Panama City Beach
community in visualizing and coordinating the first Art Camp for Kids at Pier Park the summer of 2007. It was such a rewarding experience for me to bring my love of art to so many budding young artists. I like quoting Pablo Picasso: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”
I tell my adult students, “Lose the fear of doing the wrong thing on your painting. After all, it’s just a piece of canvas.”
My desire for all who attempt this great endeavor of being an artist is to just let it happen and have fun, for goodness’ sake!
Although I do have a paint party business (mypaintparty.com) and continue to give private lessons, I really enjoy creating for my client's their own unique work of art.
